Brigitte Samaelsdotter hails from the Oryeyi people, a nomadic hunter-gather tribe that roams the steppes far to the frozen north. The Oryeyi are a fierce people, constantly engaged in inter-tribal conflict over the best land for hunting. Aside from rival tribes, they must be constantly vigilant against the various monsters that roam the hunting grounds as well. Because of this, and because of the naturally harsh environment in which they live, every person is expected to pull their own weight.
The Oryeyi have a disdain for city folk, who they perceive as weak for their reliance on craftsmen to make their weapons, homes and clothing. The Oryeyi believe that every man or woman should be able to hunt their own food, skin their own hides, and craft their own shelter. All young people in the tribe go through a rite of passage known as Suchenweg, a period where they adventure in the world as a test of their skill and ability to survive alone. The Suchenweg is ended when the individual has acquired skills, knowledge and experience that will make him or her a fully self-reliant individual that can provide value to the tribe. Each person's end goal is self-defined, and it is up to the individual to say when their trial has ended. Some Suchenwags end after only a few weeks or months, others have been known to go for years.
While female warriors are not unheard of in the Oryeyi, they are still a rare occurance. However, Brigitte’s father Samael was faced with two indisputable facts: one, his wife had failed to produce a male heir and two, his eldest daughter was unusally large and sturdy for a woman. The Oryeyi are nothing if not practical – it would have been foolish not to take advantage of Brigitte’s natural physical gifts and Samael’s experience as a skilled fighter. Thus, Brigitte began training with her father from a very early age.
Samael was aware of the villages and towns whose borders seemed to creep ever closer to Oryeyi lands with each passing winter, and he realized it was only a matter of time before the Oryeyi would be forced to confront these outsiders. When Brigitte departed for her Suchenwag at age 17, her father asked her to learn about these neighboring lands as part of her quest for knowledge, so that the tribe would be better prepared to negotiate with (or fight, if necessary) these people.
Brigitte has spent the past seven years traveling the land, learning as much as she can along the way. While Brigitte shares her tribe’s general distaste for city dwellers who can’t even hunt their own food, her travels have shown her that it is a grave mistake to underestimate a person just because they lack certain skills. Her warrior background naturally attracts her to anyone who can teach her about military strategy and history. She spent several years as a sell-sword, joining the army of King Licinius, where she honed her sword craft and learned to use the heavier classes of armor.
After that she spent time with a group of adventurers, where she quickly learned the value of literacy after the group’s cleric read the directions to a scroll wrong and accidentally incinerated 90% of the group. She departed the group and sought out a tutor to teach her to read and speak various languages. Brigitte now insists on reading all contracts or written instructions herself.
